DeSales MBA Program, a Worthwhile Investment

DeSales MBA graduate, Rodolphe Tankpinou, was recently      featured in Lehigh Valley Style magazine.  His expertise on     wardrobe shines through    his article as he recommends wardrobe selections.  The DeSales MBA program  is proud to call Rodolphe alumna.

As Rodolphe states that the DeSales MBA program is a      “worthwhile investment,” he offers much more on his decision        and experience with it.  Rodolphe grew up in a family who had an expectation of being highly educated, which prompted him to     pursue his MBA.  His mother’s 30 years of involvement in      academia especially contributed to his goal to continue his  education.  In addition, Rodolphe’s personal aspiration to be “appropriately equipped for succeeding” in his career completed his decision.  As Rodolphe’s search for his perfect MBA program began, his attraction towards DeSales University blossomed.  He expressed that DeSales University’s catholic values stood out to him as they aligned greatly with his own.  Also, after receiving positive recommendations from various sources, his decision to pursue his MBA with DeSales was clear.

Mainly an on-site student, Rodolphe had several memorable experiences during his time in the DeSales MBA program.  The one that will always remain with him is the relationship that grew with his advisor, Jim Castagna.   Jim was not only very resourceful, but also immensely interested in having Rodolphe succeed.  Rodolphe is, and always will be, grateful to Jim for that.  After three years of hard work in completing his MBA, he is proud to say that his MBA has had nothing but a positive effect on his life personally and professionally.  As Rodolphe says, “Obtaining my MBA has undoubtedly added to the amount of drive I have to be an exemplary inspiration to my community and to the world.”  Professionally, his MBA played an important role on two fronts.  First, he used the knowledge from the Capstone course to define a strategy for his newly formed company, “The Atlas of Style.”  Additionally, his MBA was instrumental in helping him secure a new position at Dun & Bradstreet.

Inevitably, challenges arise throughout our daily lives.  Sometimes these struggles discourage persistence and make goals feel unreachable.  As most students, Rodolphe had to overcome a few challenges in his pursuit of the MBA.  He exclaimed, “There were many challenges I needed to overcome, which really made the program worthwhile, and still exciting!”  Besides being a full-time student, he went through the program as a married father of two, maintained a full-time job schedule, and participated in service and volunteer work for his community.   It is quite stressful reading those obligations let alone having them!  Without a doubt, Rodolphe illustrates his work ethic and persistence.  DeSales MBA Program is proud to have an alumna with such admirable traits.

Rodolphe Tankpinou is eager to recommend the DeSales MBA program to others.  His first reason is simply our adequate school environment.  Rodolphe stresses the importance of the right environment for students; furthermore, he believes the DeSales MBA program provides the perfect learning environment.  The flexibility of the program is extremely helpful to working professionals, and the instructors, staff, and students truly made the program enjoyable.  Rodolphe advocates, “All of these reasons together contribute to the program’s great reputation.”  On behalf of the DeSales MBA program, we are honored to name Rodolphe Tankpinou a successful DeSales MBA graduate, and friend.

Dr. Giovanelli: "Do your best in your own state of life and learn to look back"

It’s a great honor for me to receive the Doctorate in Humane Letters from the DeSales University. This is truly an unexpected and surprising recognition, for which I sincerely thank the President Fr. O’Connor and the Board of the University. This recognition is not only unexpected but also undeserved, considering, among other things, my poor knowledge of the English language, which you are called to endure for the next ten minutes. Please, accept my apologies at the onset!

Dr. Flaminia Giovanelli at DeSales Graduation, May 2014In looking for the reasons for this honor, I think that it isn’t hard to find them in my nearly forty-year-long service at the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, one of the Dicasteries of the Holy See that was created after the Second Vatican Council, as a result of the Council itself. This has been a very rich and absolutely special—although not unique—experience, which has allowed me to accompany, almost personally, “The joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the men of this age”[1] and especially of the poor.

I have been able to do this from a privileged situation. This, indeed, is the situation of those who, in the service of the Pope and the universal Church, and precisely in virtue of this service, are in daily contact with what is happening in every part of the world in the field of justice and peace. In this respect, I received, in the course of these long years, direct testimonies from Christians and non-Christians who are active at every level of the Church, in national and international institutions, in the world of work and in civil society.

In the course of these decades straddling two centuries, during which, with the phenomenon of globalization, the world and its problems have changed so much and so quickly, I have, in the midst of all, been able to identify a permanent feature: promoting the cause of justice and peace ultimately means defending the human person and his or her true rights, that is, rights that have a foundation in his or her duties as a creature to whom the Creator has given everything, beginning with life itself, and which also have their origin in Nature and Reason.

If the problem is not put in these terms, then it’s impossible to talk about social justice, the right to sustainable development and the related issues—which currently are, for example, access to water or the hoarding of land or mining resources. It is also not possible to talk about peace and about politics as the construction of the common good through the democratic system. In fact, if the latter is based only on the numbers of the majority and not on what is intrinsically good for the human person, that system can turn into a perverse one.[2]

As Commencement Speaker, I could continue talking about these issues, since I have been given the freedom to do so, but Cardinal Peter Turkson, the President of the Pontifical Council, has advised me to keep my speech short! Now, since I have so many young people before me, I would like to share with you some of the beliefs that I have gained over the years. Yet, being neither a professor nor a mother, please accept these few ideas as coming from an aunt and a godmother—which I indeed am. That may perhaps be easier for you!

Here, then, are some of my beliefs that I would like to submit for your consideration.

Believing in eternal life or not. The difference in the lives of each of us is made by the fact of believing in eternal life or not. Everything seen in the perspective of eternity assumes different contours and becomes meaningful. A historical event considered as oriented toward the boundaries of eternity is judged by a distinct yardstick. This is true also for every life. There are , for example, particularly troubled lives, marked by disease, spiritual suffering or adverse circumstances—in a word, characterized by failure—and, yet, when considered in relation to a life that does not end here, these lives also have value and can find their deeper meaning. Of course, I say this not to invite to fatalism or disengagement, because a good position, in eternal life, has to be earned! This is true especially for those who have received, without any special merit, more talents than the others.

Not only what can be scientifically demonstrated is true. We are living in the era of science and technology, and many of you have studied the sciences and will enter into careers in these fields. I admire you a lot, as I admire and rejoice in the progress that science and technology have allowed mankind to make. Nevertheless, I would like to express another of my deep convictions: Not only what can be scientifically demonstrated is true.[3] I say this not only to gain your sympathy, since I’m simply not scientifically and technologically gifted, but because due consideration should be given to the truth that cannot be demonstrated of values such as responsibility, honesty, humility, and mutual respect, which are also mentioned on the website of your university, where these words glide on the home page over eye-catching pictures.

It’s necessary to consider also, if not above all, friendship and love of neighbor, which is much more than a feeling; it is, rather, “an elementary ardor that nourishes life” as the young Dutch Jew Etty Hillesum wrote just a few days before her death in Auschwitz.[4] In fact, without friendship and love of neighbor, all possible achievement in the field of science and technology will not, by themselves, make humanity progress.

The truth is complex. I have yet another conviction that I will share with you, and that is acquired as the years pass: the awareness of just how complex the truth is. Especially when we are young - or at least this is what I thought when I was your age - we think that everything is black or white, that everything is either good or bad, and that some people are right and others wrong. Now, thinking in this way is inherently positive because it implies that we believe in objective truth, and this, in times of moral relativism, is much deserving! However, it’s also true that the reality in which we live, especially in our days, is getting more and more complicated, and that it’s getting increasingly difficult to make a discernment in the social, political, economic situation, because so many aspects have to be taken into account, and not only the technical or scientific ones but also historical and cultural aspects, for which we need to resort to multiple disciplines. Then again, even personal behavior or everyday situations—related, more often than not, to the lives of families—are motivated by a mixture of components that has to be taken into account, if we want to freely evaluate them in accordance with the truth, and consequently with justice and charity. So, as one of my old professor used to say: if the solution is easy, you can be sure that it’s wrong!

Do your best in your own state of life and learn to look back. After completing your studies, many of you will embark on a career or continue to study, responding in this way to your personal vocation. Some of you have perhaps always known what they wanted to do: there are those who have a passion for mathematics, others are born artists or craftsmen, some want to be engineers, while yet others want to be missionaries, and there are those who want to write books or have an innate sense for business, and finally there are also those who, like me, have never felt a particular vocation. I would like to make to the latter a suggestion, which to some extent also applies to the former: move along with the circumstances, always trying to do good and avoid evil; and every once in a while look back to consider carefully what has happened to you in your life. You will see that in everything there is a logic, an itinerary, sometimes a very bumpy one, that God has planned for each of us, even for those who do not experience a precise vocation. God has done this with the help of our beloved ones, of those who love us, protect us and pray for us. This is so, even when they are no longer there: if the seed does not die, it does not bear fruit.

The importance of the word. Finally, if there is something that has always impressed me in the human being, it’s the link between the perfection of his or her body and intelligence, his or her spirit and soul. Now, this connection is due to the word, which is what gives human beings the ability to express themselves and so to enter into a relationship with others. When you think about it, being able to name objects and people, being able to “translate” in words reasonings, abstract ideas, and feelings, is such an extraordinary fact that it leaves you awestruck. The believers can’t help seeing a Mind, a higher Wisdom, behind this fact. Maybe that's why I like to write always trying to look for the most appropriate words, and why what I do best is to write books for kids! I like it especially because, since I write in rhymes, I found out that to look for rhyming words for storytelling is a very very amusing game.

Yet, of course, my passion and my amazement before the word and the human being’s ability to express himself in words leads me to make a more serious consideration. Perhaps it’s precisely because of the exceptional nature of this human capacity that the Word—with a capital “W”—is so important for the Christian religion. This is precisely why God creates through the Word, why Jesus Christ “is the God’s final Word to humanity” and Jesus Christ alone has the words of eternal life, as says St. Peter, the great sinner, who is capable of repenting, crying and asking for forgiveness and accepting it.

Coming from Rome, there’s no other way for me to conclude my speech than by inviting all of you to imitate St. Peter!

With nine Tony Awards and a historic, record-setting Broadway run when it debuted 50 years ago, Fiddler on the Roof has been called "the greatest musical of all time."

Timeless songs—"If I Were a Rich Man," "Sabbath Prayer," and "Sunrise, Sunset"—underscore a universal story about family, love, tradition, and change.  Directed by Dennis Razze, PSF associate artistic director, the musical previews June 11 and 12, opens June 13 and runs through June 29 on the Main Stage of the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts on the DeSales University campus. Ticket prices range from $25 to $56.

Tevye, the philosophical dairyman who achieved worldwide renown, faces changes in his village that challenge the traditions he cherishes and the faith that defines his life. Joe Vincent takes on the iconic role. Vincent, whose career includes a combined 32 years at some of the country’s most renowned Shakespeare festivals, has played Tevye several times and returns to PSF following a turn as Big Daddy in the 2012 production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Anne Kanengeiser, Broadway veteran and a two-time recipient of Washington’s Helen Hayes Award, portrays Tevye’s occasionally cantankerous wife Golde, who plots to marry off their daughters with Yenta, played by Patti Mariano, whose Broadway credits range from Bye Bye Birdie to The Full Monty to the revival of 42nd Street.

PSF regular John Ahlin plays Lazar Wolf, an eager suitor for Tevye’s reluctant eldest daughter, Tzeitel, Jennifer Apple, whose heart belongs to another. Also vying for Tzeitel is Motel, the tailor, played by Hunter Ringsmith.

Jonathan Raviv portrays Perchik, a student Tevye employs to teach his daughters. Perchik becomes enamored of Hodel, played by Leah Scofield. Breaking all of Tevye’s expectations is Chava, Christine Baglivio, who falls in love with a Russian gentile, Fyedka, played by Matt Kleckner.

Set in 1905 on the eve of the Russian revolutionary period, Fiddler was written by Joseph Stein with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. The three were all successful Broadway artists who adapted the Ukrainian-born Sholem Aleichem’s Teyve stories for the stage.

Stephen Casey is recreating Jerome Robbins original choreography. Casey, who choreographed Oklahoma! at PSF last season to great acclaim, has a team of male dancers who fearlessly face off with each other in the famed “To Life” sequence: Sean Bell, Cody Davis and Ben Delony lead the dance ensemble.

Musical Director and conductor is Nathan Diehl. J. Alex Cordaro is fight director. Scenery is designed by Will Neuert; costumes by Sam Fleming and Eric T. Haugen, lights; Ian P. Carr, sound.

Production Sponsor is Alvin H. Butz, Inc., and co-sponsors are Air Products Inc. and Diefenderfer Electrical Contractors. Season Sponsor is Breslin, Ridyard, and Fadero Architects Inc.; Associate Season Sponsors are Linda Lapos and Paul Wirth, the Szarko Family, and The Harry C. Trexler Trust. Media sponsors are The Morning Call and Service Electric Cable TV & Communications.

For tickets, call 610.282.WILL [9455] or go online to www.pashakespeare.org.

The season also features The Two Gentlemen of Verona (June 18 – July 13); Lend Me a Tenor (July 9 – August 3) in repertory with Macbeth (July 17 – August 3); Tina Packer’s Women of Will (July 20 – August 3); Cinderella (through August 2); and Shakespeare for Kids (July 23 - August 2).

PSF is also offering two “one-night-only” performances: Anthony Lawton’s adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce, Monday, June 23 at 7:30pm and the world-renowned Baltimore Consort will present “The Food of Love: Songs for Shakespeare” on Monday, July 28 at 7:30pm.

Taking Commitment to the Next Level: Couples Taking Graduate Classes Together

$

Without a doubt, pursuing an MBA requires commitment…especially one for those who work full-time and have families to care for, above other obligations.  Couples Marquise & Joy Frazier and Chris & Christina Schoemaker decided to take commitment to the next level.  Not only are they committed to each other, but they are also graduates and current students committed to the DeSales MBA program!

As DeSales MBA graduates, Marquise and Joy agree that the support of one another helped them succeed in the program.  Similarly, as current students of the program, Chris and Christina have learned more about their careers as well as each other.

Marquise and Joy Frazier are proud DeSales MBA
graduates.  In order to advance their careers, they decided to
pursue an MBA together for support and foundation.  They
believe being married would add to the advancement, and it
did!  The DeSales MBA program offered convenience in
several ways to the Fraziers.  As full-time employees and
parents, the location convenience, including the flexibility to
take courses online, became an important factor in their
decision to come to DeSales University.

Both Marquise and Joy agree that their best experience was in their final Capstone course.  In this course, the students had to choose a partner for the “Business Strategy game.”  They decided to be partners for their final class and both said they “Couldn’t have been with anyone else!”  Proudly, this power couple made top five - a very happy accomplishment for them.  Obtaining their MBAs has definitely made an impact on both of their lives personally, and professionally.  Marquise has gained more confidence in his knowledge of his career and enjoys encouraging his kids by telling them, “Daddy has three degrees!”  Undoubtedly, acquiring his MBA has given him a personal sense of achievement that he can be proud of.  Professionally, Marquise experienced career advancement as the Clinical Operations Manager of Radiation Oncology at John Hopkins University in Washington, D.C.  He is happy to say that his MBA has, “opened so many doors and I feel that the sky is the limit!”

For Joy personally, her MBA has afforded her the opportunity to demonstrate the importance of education to her children.  She expresses, “I like to think we are great role models for our kids,” to which many would agree.  She has experienced so many changes in her professional life, especially in leadership roles, and when she is ready to advance her career, she is excited for what the future holds.  Armed with her DeSales MBA degree, she is confident doors will open for her as well.

Together, it took three years to complete their MBAs; in unison, they agree that, “real life takes precedence.”  With the exception of the obligation to work, they endured a different kind of challenge they had to overcome while pursuing their MBAs.  About midway through the program, Marquise and Joy found out that both of their children have autism.  Without a doubt, this struggle added more stress to their lives.  However, they persevered and rose above the struggles and found that being in school gave them the ability to see how to deal with their children’s autism.  Majoring in Healthcare Systems Management truly helped them learn the “ins and outs” of the healthcare industry.

Both Marquise and Joy enthusiastically recommend the DeSales MBA program to others.  Joy exclaims, “Without a doubt, the DeSales MBA program is a great program.  After completing the surveys each session, it was clear that our feedback was heard.  That is awesome and really important.”  Marquise wholeheartedly agreed with his wife’s recommendation of the DeSales MBA program, and added, “Dr. Gilfoil is fantastic!”  Dr. Dave Gilfoil is the DeSales MBA Director, and also a full-time faculty member.  Marquise had the opportunity of learning from Dr. Gilfoil, and admired his knowledge and.  Above all, Marquise and Joy agree that the faculty was truly amazing, including Associate MBA Director, Mary Ann Falk, and Administrative Secretary, Kim Karpinski.   They learned a lot and feel the three years’ worth of additional knowledge has changed them for life.

Chris and Christina Schoemaker are current students in the DeSales MBA Program.  Deeply devoted to personal and professional development, Chris decided to pursue his MBA.  Christina is a very goal-orientated individual and obtaining her MBA was a personal goal even before her undergraduate work.  Chris believes that taking the time to go through the program without his wife would “hamper their personal development
and their ability to contribute to the success of their employers.”   He also feels he has learned more about personal and professional development from Christina over anyone else and she has become his “competitive advantage!”  The result of going through the program together has provided a priceless resource of support and experience they would not have access to alone.  Chris and Christina possess a drive for increasing excellence in their personal and professional lives, the incredible organizations they work for, and for their community.  Decision to pursue the MBA together stemmed from their desire to maximize their talents and be resources to one another.  This inspiring couple has always managed their family with the mindset that “together we fail or succeed,” so participating in the DeSales MBA program together was a natural and easy decision!  Christina cheers, “Soon, we’ll be MBA’s squared!”

It did not take long to mark the DeSales MBA program as their final decision for a few different reasons.  Similar to the Fraziers, flexibility was one of the most important factors for the Schoemakers due to their busy schedule.  DeSales MBA offers the ability to take classes on-site and/or online, providing the flexibility most working adults search for.  As a Lehigh Valley Health Network employee, a partner of DeSales MBA program, Christina quickly bumped DeSales to the top of her list on behalf of her colleague’s recommendations.  However, both Chris and Christina agree that Associate Director, Mary Ann Falk put the cherry on top for their decision to pursue their MBAs with DeSales University!  Chris happily expresses, “Mary Ann did an excellent job of walking me through what was needed for me to graduate as soon as possible with my MBA.  Her personal touch played a big factor in my decision to attend DeSales.”  Christina adds, “Mary Ann certainly sealed the deal for me as she explained the affordability and flexibility of the DeSales MBA program!  I have come to rely on her expertise and guidance.”

Chris and Christina have had wonderful experiences on their DeSales MBA journey thus far.  In particular to Chris, the Executive Forum with Dave DeCampli was a highlight.  While it gave MBA students the chance to speak directly to one of Lehigh Valley’s top executives, it was also a proud moment for Chris as a PPL employee.  Chris is proud to be employed by PPL and he feels that his classmates were able to experience the leadership in his company and the culture PPL strives to maintain.  Additionally, Chris enjoys learning the backgrounds of other students, breaking down their thought process in dealing with specific challenges, and having their experiences as another instrument in his tool belt to use in his daily life.  As for Christina, her best experience occurred during the final project in MK501, Buyer Behavior, with Professor Joseph King.  She elaborates on how Professor King asked each student to evaluate the strategic marketing plan of their current employer or another corporation.  Ecstatic, Christina received the opportunity to meet with the leaders of Lehigh Valley Health Network.  This experience allowed her to gain valuable insight into different areas of expertise at LVHN.  Also, Christina was able to create relationships with colleagues whom she had very little interaction with before the project.

Naturally, juggling a family, work, and graduate school can be enough to knock anyone down.  However, with their perseverance and DeSales MBA program’s flexibility, Chris and Christina have been pushing forward and continuing their journey to graduation.  Combining a blend of on-site and online classes, they have been able to maintain their daily schedules and still have time for a summer family vacation!  Although the flexibility of online classes is beneficial, Chris and Christina still appreciate on-site classes to experience personal connection, classroom settings, and networking opportunities.

Despite being current students, the Schoemakers already feel the impact their DeSales MBA journey is making on them.  While both are full-time parents, employees, MBA students and community volunteers, they wind up elevating themselves to a new level of stress, success, and potential.  Without the help of the DeSales MBA program, Chris and Christina may not have been able to see what they are capable of.  Chris believes, “if you want something bad enough, you just do it.  You do it knowing you are going to make life better for your spouse, your children, your employer, and your community. That mindset alone prepares you better for the workplace.”   Christina agrees and adds that the DeSales MBA program has taught her to be a better communicator which, in turn, has made her a better wife, mother, employee, and student.  The Schoemaker’s marriage and family life is stronger because they are both better in tune with their priorities and responsibilities.  Together, they say, “it’s not easy…but, nothing worth doing ever is.”  Many would agree those are excellent words of wisdom.

Certainly, challenges arrived in Chris and Christina’s pursuit of the MBA that they needed to overcome.  Regardless of the struggles, being an MBA student provided Chris with the much needed distraction throughout the year.  His demanded focus on something positive provided an outlet of stress relief.  Specifically, Chris struggled with the advanced capacity of Microsoft Excel.  During his Business Computing course with Dr. Jeffries, Chris ran into a few challenges.  Nevertheless, he successfully rose above them with hard work and persistence, and benefitted as a better student because of it.  Christina realized her prolific procrastinator days had to end.  In the beginning of the DeSales MBA program, she quickly understood that her time management skills needed work. “It’s impossible to juggle so many responsibilities and procrastinate on assignments,” insists Christina, a now effective and efficient time manager thanks to the DeSales MBA program and her determination.

Indisputably, Chris and Christina would like to extend their recommendation of DeSales MBA Program.  The interactions with the staff and camaraderie in the classroom are unforgettable experiences.  Additionally, it makes them very happy that increased interest has come from LVHN as well as PPL.  Chris explains, “The leadership qualities that are reinforced throughout the DeSales MBA program are common sense ideals that transfer to a successful marriage and a unified family.”  For example, listening with humility and having a high self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses has made Chris a better husband and father.  He ends with, “it’s an added benefit you don’t expect to get out of a business program.”  Comments like this are what DeSales MBA program strives for, and we are happy to offer skills that go beyond the workplace.

As for Christina, she has recently become the Director of Development for Valley Youth House, leading the fundraising initiatives for the agency and joining their leadership team.  Upon successful completion of the MBA program, she will receive a promotion to Vice President for Development.  Aside from the strategic career advancement, she is eager to serve the mission of Valley Youth House, in aiding to provide better outcomes for the youth in our community and beyond.

Ultimately, DeSales MBA program is proud to have such inspiring students who are committed in more ways than one.  Clearly, couples taking graduate classes offer the support and encouragement to each other that they need.  We are proud to be a program with increasing numbers of married couples attending together. While teaching students the necessities for their career, instilling family values and skills to better themselves makes the DeSales MBA program’s intentions complete.

Our latest film endeavor (Anne Lewis, Director; Steven Dennis – Actor; Freshman Emma Santschi – Actor; Chuck Gloman – Producer and DP) has been accepted into two film festivals:

Churches Making Movies Christian Film Festival

This film festival is on October 10 – 13 at the Woodbridge Renaissance in Iselin, New Jersey. Their mission statement says, “Jesus transformed hearts, renewed minds, and saved souls. In the 21st Century, filmmakers are some of our most influential storytellers. Through their stories, filmmakers heavily influence our beliefs, establish some of our traditions, and define many of our values. The ability of these stories to change the world is a testament to why we should make movies. We strive to make films an integral part of Christian Ministry.”

Highway 61 Film Festival

This film festival is on October 3 – 5 in Pine City, Minnesota. Because “Storing Treasures” was a student crewed production, it has been accepted into this film festival.

Congratulations to all of the talented faculty (Anne Lewis, Steven Dennis), and student filmmakers (you know who you are) that DeSales’s message and our capability can be seen elsewhere.

Brisson and Chappuis Statues Blessed
Fr. Alexander Pocetto, OSFS, blesses the statues of students, Blessed Louis Brisson, and Sr. Mary de Sales Chappuis. The Very Rev. James Greenfield, OSFS '81, provincial of the Oblates reads the prayer.

On Wednesday, June 18, 2014, DeSales University celebrated the blessing of a new statue group in front of Connelly Chapel on the Center Valley, Pa., campus.

The Very Reverend James Greenfield, OSFS, provincial of the Wilmington-Philadelphia Province of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales and a DeSales graduate, blessed the statues during the annual Oblate Convocation. The Convocation, a spiritual gathering of Oblate priests in the province, is held annually at DeSales. The Oblates are the order of priests that administer the University.

The cast bronze statues depict Blessed Louis Brisson, founder of two religious orders: the Oblates and the Oblate Sisters, and Sr. Mary de Sales Chappuis, co-foundress of the Oblates. The two are shown as teachers surrounded by three students.

The statues are the work of Ben Fortunado Marcune, a local artist known for his en plein air paintings of Historic Bethlehem and Bucks County, as well as his portraits of business and civic leaders, college presidents, and performing artists.

Marcune’s sculptures for DeSales University include the Our Lady of Deliverance statue and the statues of St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal.

The plaques at the statue plaza read:

Blessed Louis Brisson, OSFS (1817-1908)

Born in the Champagne region of France, Louis entered the diocesan seminary of Troyes and was ordained to the priesthood in 1840. He established a ministry to young working women by setting up shelters and schools for them. Along with St. Leionie Aviat, he founded the Oblate Sisters of St. Francis de Sales to administer his various foundations in the spirit of St. Francis de Sales. At the instigation of Mother Mary de Sales Chappuis, superior of the Visitation Monastery in Troyes, France, Fr. Brisson founded the male community of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales in 1875. It is this religious community of Oblates who have ministered to De Sales University since its inception in 1961. Fr. Brisson was declared Blessed on September 2, 2012 in the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in Troyes, France.

Mary de Sales Chappuis ( 1793-1875)

Affectionately known as the Good Mother, this Swiss Visitation nun, as superior, brought the monastery of Troyes back to the true spirit of Sts. Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal. She kept after Fr. Brisson for 30 years to found a congregation of men whose mission would be to live and disseminate the Salesian spirit and charism. So she is considered to be the co-foundress and inspirer of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. She was widely recognized and admired in 19th century France as the foremost interpreter and exemplar of Salesian spirituality.

DeSales University’s MBA program recently had the pleasure of hosting a fifth group of healthcare students from Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) in Lima, Peru, for a week-long study tour.  This visit provided our Peruvian guests, all doctors, nurses and dentists, with an overview and insight into pertinent issues and workings of the U.S. healthcare system.  Industry presentations were given by Dr. Patrick Kenny from the DeSales University Nursing Department, Ms. Susan Johns and Eileen Goodwin from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Medicare/Medicaid office, Ms. Janine Haar and Mr. David Ritter from Benecon Insurance, Ms. Ruth Brennan from Blue Mountain Health System, and Dr. Wayne Stuart of the DeSales University Physician’s Assistant Program.

To enrich their experience and view actual operations in progress, the students also toured OAA Orthopaedic Specialists, Teva Pharmaceuticals, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Oral Dynamics.  The DeSales University MBA program looks forward to hosting another group of healthcare students next year.

DeSales University’s MBA program director, Dr. David Gilfoil, remarked, “We are pleased to have such a strong relationship with UPC and always look forward to welcoming these medical doctors to DeSales each year.  Both the US and UPC participants continue to articulate how much they value the experiences that we facilitate.  We look forward to continued collaborations with them.”

DeSales has been in partnership with UPC for the past six years.   This partnership affords our universities the unique opportunity to offer reciprocal cross cultural study tours.
