In early November, a group of scholars, curators, filmmakers, and graduate students working on Latin American cinema in the North East area gathered in a two-day symposium to discuss film in the digital age. One of the attendees was the TV/Film Department’s Assistant Professor Esther Duran, who was invited to present her most recent documentary project, A Chocolate Conquest, an interactive docu-web series about cocoa farming communities in Venezuela.
The symposium is the third iteration of Encrucijadas/Encrucilhadas: Dialogues for Latin American Cinema, an initiate organized by faculty from different institutions, including New York University and Fordham University. With screenings, curatorships, academic panels, and roundtables with programmers and filmmakers, the symposium is an opportunity to share research and information, engage in collaborative efforts among institutions, and encourage an open discussion on critical topics and issues in contemporary Latin American cinema, as well as on its history and trajectory.
