"Selfless Love is Very Much Needed" — Bishop Schlert's Agape Latte Message

Bishop Alfred Schlert is no stranger to DeSales University. He’s visited campus as a member of the University’s Board of Trustees. This time around, he spoke to students as part of the Agape Latte speaker series.

The coffee house inspired series focuses on stories of self-sacrificial, all encompassing love. Bishop Schlert, who was installed as the fifth bishop of Allentown in August, spoke about selfless love.

“As we see in current events, there’s a lack of love everywhere we look,” he said. “I think this idea of selfless love is very much needed. And it is really the love of Christ.”

He pointed to “feed my sheep,” the motto he chose after becoming bishop. He views it not only as his daily charge, but also as an “examination of conscience” to reflect upon how well he’s done. He was quick to point out that the motto is not his alone.

“Everyone is called to feed the sheep of Christ,” he said. “I really want to impress on you that you are ambassadors for Christ in bringing selfless love into the world.”

Bishop Schlert also gave students tips on how to feed the sheep. He encouraged them to be joyful, be faithful, and be courageous in defending and living their faith.
